The Shadowed Thicket

The Shadowed Thicket formed in the deeper reaches of the old wood, where sunlight thinned and the forest grew more secretive. Its earliest shelters were not built in open clearings, but hidden in roots, hollows, tangled boughs, and spaces that seemed to appear only when approached with care. Those who settled there learned quickly that concealment was not fear; it was wisdom.

Over time, the place became a haven for beings who preferred shadow to welcome mats and riddles to straight roads. They shaped homes from living wood, hung lanterns where no honest traveler should follow, and let the mist guard what fences could not. Outsiders spoke of shifting paths and unseen figures, but those who belonged there knew the truth was less simple: the Thicket protected its own by making strangers uncertain.

Now it remains a dark counterpoint to the brighter sanctuaries of the greater wood. It shelters laughter with sharp edges, kindness with conditions, and secrets that refuse to be dragged into daylight. The forest around it still shifts, still watches, and still decides who is wandering, who is welcome, and who has made a very interesting mistake.
