What Frostmaw Owes

Teen 13+
In Frostmaw Village kindness is never free. Every shared fire, every warm meal, every hand that dragged someone out of a snowdrift is a debt, and on the longest nights of winter the village pays what it owes. They call it the Owing. Small tokens are carved from bone, wood or stone and left silently in the snow on doorsteps, never signed, never spoken of. A debt repaid in secret is a debt repaid with honor.

Some tokens never reach their door. Some are owed to people who left the village, or who live alone in the high drifts, or who refuse every kindness offered. This year Thrynn Winterclaw has been trusted with all of them.

He will deliver every one. That is his word. But at the bottom of the sack is a token carved with his own name, and nobody in Frostmaw will admit to making it. You can help him carry the Owing across the winter, discover who believes they owe Thrynn a kindness, and learn what he once did that someone never forgot.

Frostmaw Village sits in a snow basin beside a small frozen lake: round domed houses of packed snow and ice, a few low stone huts and paths trodden hard between them. Sleds, sled-dog kennels and drying racks crowd the doorways, ice-fishing holes dot the lake and chimney smoke rises straight up in the still cold. A whalebone arch marks the way in, a carved totem circle stands at the center and the biggest ice dome glows warm orange from within. It is home to the Frostmaw, the hardy beastkin of the north.

Carved from glacier and frost, the villages of the frozen north rise like shimmering citadels of ice. Domed structures, sculpted with precision, gleam beneath the pale northern sun, their walls thick enough to hold warmth against the endless cold. Frozen tunnels weave beneath the surface, connecting homes and halls, sheltering the people from the harshest storms. Blue firelight flickers within carved archways, casting long shadows against the snow. To the unprepared, this place is a frozen wasteland, but to those who have mastered its secrets, it is sanctuary-strong, unyielding, and as enduring as the ice itself.

In Frostmaw a kindness is a debt. He means to pay every one.
