Gownsend Ferry
Below Wyndcroft Academy a beach of pale sand faces a narrow strait, and on the far side Coral Bay's cliffs drop into the sea. The Gownsend Ferry is a long, light six-oared gig painted in the Academy's colors and crewed entirely by students, who row it as part of their training and argue about the stroke the whole way. A coxswain from the Academy sits in the stern, keeps them honest and keeps the boat off the rocks.
On the Coral Bay side the gig lands at the foot of a stair cut into the cliff, steep and slippery and worn smooth in the middle. Students, tutors, visiting scholars and their trunks cross every day in term time. Anyone else may ride for a fare, and the crew will sometimes take a good lesson, a new song or a useful piece of gossip in place of coin.
