The Scroll Tasted Funny

Teen 13+
The Scroll Tasted Funny begins with a simple mistake, provided one defines eating an enchanted scroll as simple. A loyal little dog with a heroic appetite swallows something they absolutely should not have swallowed, and the magic does what magic tends to do when introduced to poor judgment: it makes everything worse, stranger, and harder to explain.

Now the pup can shift into a squat, bulldog-faced, almost-person shape with clever hands, guilty eyes, and far too many new ways to touch things they should not touch. This would be useful if they were wise, patient, or capable of not licking suspicious runes. Unfortunately, they are still very much the same pup: loyal, impulsive, snack-driven, and determined to protect their person while hiding the fact that they caused the problem in the first place.

As strange effects ripple through the keep, the accidental shifter must sneak, sniff, lie badly, and fix what they broke before the warden discovers the truth. Every glowing wall, missing parchment scrap, and suspicious pawprint brings them closer to exposure, while the eaten magic keeps tugging at the runes around them. If they are very lucky, they may earn redemption without bath time.

He is, by all reasonable accounts, a dog. Short, stubborn, broad-chested, and blessed with the tragic confidence of a creature who believes every closed door is a personal challenge, he waddles through frozen halls with enough noise to ruin any proper mystery. His eyes are too innocent, his timing is too suspicious, and his mouth is almost always full of something he was not meant to have.

Unfortunately, one of those things was a magic scroll. After eating it with the full confidence of a fool chasing snacks, he gained the ability to shift into a squat, bulldog-faced, anthropomorphic form with clever paw-hands, boots, pockets, and entirely too many opportunities to make worse decisions. He understands this is probably bad. He also understands that hiding it is easier than explaining why the scroll is gone.

Now he lives a double life between loyal ward and secret little disaster. In one form, he is the warden’s troublesome dog, thumping his tail, stealing warmth, and looking guilty near broken objects. In the other, he sneaks through corridors, opens latches, guards his person, and tries very hard not to get caught doing things a normal dog absolutely should not be able to do.

He is the man left standing where the civilized world runs out of excuses. In the frozen halls of the old keep, he keeps watch over runes, seals, and conduit lines that most people are wise enough to fear and foolish enough to depend upon. Pale, tired, and sharper than he looks, he carries the burden of magic with ink-stained hands and the expression of someone who has been interrupted during the end of the world.

His strength is not the kind sung about in taverns. It is quieter, meaner, and far less decorative: the strength to keep working when sleep has become theoretical, to correct one more failing rune, to ignore praise, panic, and visitors in equal measure. He does not like company, but he will accept help if the alternative is watching ancient stone tear itself open.

His only reliable companion is a massive, unruly dog who causes half his problems, detects the other half, and somehow remains impossible to replace. Together, they haunt the frozen corridors like a warning no one bothered to write down. If the conduit fails, the realm may not understand what happened until magic itself forgets how to move.

Timony Keep

All Ages

Timony Keep is a massive stone stronghold on an icy crag above a glacier, its walls bearded with icicles and its high windows glowing a faint blue. One snowy switchback road climbs from the glacier to a single great gate, and inside the outer bailey a few stone buildings huddle around a frozen courtyard and its well. A low stone hut by the outer gate keeps a big fire burning in its open doorway for anyone who made the climb. Few live here: the warden, those who serve the Keep, and travelers who came because they had to.

High in the frozen north, where the wind bites and the sun lingers only in memory, Timony Keep looms like a jagged crown upon the cliffs. Its stone towers pierce the clouds, ringed in frost and humming with unseen power. No road leads cleanly to its gates-only paths carved by memory or madness. Yet still, those with the gift, the hunger, or the debt find their way.

Within its halls, magic thrums through the walls like a heartbeat. Runes shift when unobserved. Candles burn without flame. It is said the Keep holds the Great Conduit-an ancient mechanism, perhaps alive, through which all magic flows into the realm. How it functions, none can say. It simply is-because he keeps it so.

Some claim the Warden of Timony Keep does not sleep. Others whisper that the title outlives the man, wearing each guardian down until blood, name, and memory blur into duty. Whether myth or warning, one truth remains: so long as he endures, magic remains. And should that change, the world will forget how to breathe.
