They do not conquer quietly.

Their riders go to war on giant worgs, never horses, and the howl of a worg pack on the lowland wind is the first warning most enemies ever get.

Madame Mirella

Mature 16+

Race: Human. Gender: Female. Age: 36. Weight: 124 lbs (56.2 kg).

Alignment: True Neutral

The caravan arrives with drums and perfume, but the town only really notices when Madame Mirella laughs. She comes down from the painted wagons in ribboned scarves and singing bangles, takes the best table in whatever tavern is foolish enough to open its doors, and by the second round she knows who owes whom, who is lying to whom, and which guard can be persuaded to study the moon for an hour.

She sells company and conversation, and she gives away nothing she has not priced first. Drunks get her playful side, the dangerous get her sharp one, and anyone who wants something from her gets the low, smoky voice that makes people confess before they realize they have started. She listens more than she speaks. Every secret goes into a ledger nobody has ever seen, kept somewhere behind that easy smile.

The nobles she entertains think she is decoration. The thieves who drink with her think she is one of them. Both are wrong in ways she finds very profitable. Mirella has outlived better-protected women by never being exactly what anyone expected, and by remembering every name at the most inconvenient possible moment.

Sit with her and she will make you feel like the most interesting person in the room. Whether that is a gift or an appraisal depends entirely on what you are carrying, and she already has a fair idea.

Human

Humans arrive in the world without obvious advantages, which seems rude until they start turning that lack into everybody else’s scheduling problem. They build shelters where storms insist they should not, raise banners over places that keep trying to kill them, and make tools from whatever is close enough to grab. Give them a broken road, a bad season, and one questionable plan, and somehow there is a village there by spring. Annoying? Absolutely. Effective? Tragically, yes.

Their lives burn quickly compared to longer-lived peoples, and that urgency shapes everything they touch. They chase love, power, safety, glory, revenge, comfort, and terrible ideas with the same dangerous momentum. A human court can become a battlefield with better clothing, while a frontier camp can turn into a kingdom if enough stubborn fools agree to keep hammering posts into the mud. They do not always know when to stop, which is charming right up until it becomes a siege.

What makes humans significant is not perfection, purity, or some grand destiny conveniently gift-wrapped by the heavens. It is variety under pressure. They can be farmers, soldiers, rulers, wanderers, cowards, lovers, tyrants, protectors, liars, and heroes before lunch if the day is especially rude. They are ordinary in the way flint is ordinary: dull in the hand until struck, then suddenly full of fire.
