The Empty Graves

Teen 13+
The player is the go-between: carrying the order's charge up the black road, standing in a hall where the torches bow to its master, and carrying the answer back down. The lady insists she raised no one. The lord wants proof of who did, and he wants to know what the inquisitors are really looking for. In the villages, mourners want their dead returned, the order wants a confession, and someone is still opening graves at night. Each side offers the envoy a good reason to lie to the other.

In the Black Citadel, where darkness keeps court and secrets kneel, one name is spoken lower than the rest. Maltsar Darkbane is a Shadowkin of the Darkbane Legacy, the only one of his kind, and the realm has no word for what he is that it is willing to say aloud. Servants in the Citadel's long corridors learn to walk without lamps rather than risk casting a shadow he might borrow.

He is bodiless by nature. When he wills it, his smoke hardens into armor and twin blades, and when he does not, no wall, lock or ward is more than a suggestion. He opens doorways in the air and steps through them, and the doorway lingers a few heartbeats after, long enough for the unwise to peer in and find that it looks back. Shadows leave his hand as bolts, quick and black and quiet.

He is wedded to Drucilla Darkbane, and it is said the only warmth in the Citadel gathers wherever she stands. For now the stories that reach the Heartland and Three Rivers agree on one point: wherever he walks, the dark comes to heel, and the Army of Light has not yet decided whether to fear him or to quarrel over him.

In the Black Citadel, where darkness keeps court and secrets kneel, there is a lady who sits at her husband's right hand and does the work no one else will admit needs doing. Drucilla Darkbane, elf of the Darkbane line, is a necromancer and a blood mage, and blood magic is forbidden in the realm. She does not seem to mind. She treats the law the way she treats a badly cut gown: something to be altered.

Her craft is as terrible as it is delicate. She draws the blood of the fallen into spears, lashes and shimmering barriers, and she can raise the freshly dead to stand at her command. Every working demands her whole mind, which leaves her utterly defenseless while the red light burns, and afterward it leaves her drained for as long as the casting ran. A woman in that state needs guards, so she keeps husbands and secrets close, in that order.

She is rarely seen apart from Maltsar Darkbane, the shadow the realm whispers about, and some say she is seen at all only when she wishes it. Those who have met her report good manners, a tidy graveyard and the persistent feeling of having been politely added to a list. She says her purpose is the realm and the people in it. The realm has not been asked to agree.

The Forgotten Reach is Ebonvale's wild mountain coast: sheer cliffs dropping straight into the surf, needle peaks, rope bridges and fog, with old ruins clinging to the rock. The Perch's nest homes cling to its spires, and somewhere in its black mountains the Black Citadel is carved into the rock itself.

The Forgotten Reach stands where the world seems to run out of patience and fall straight into the sea. Towering cliffs rise from violent surf with no beach below, no gentle harbor, and no easy place for a frightened boat to pretend it belongs. Fog clings to the stone in thick white folds, muting the crash of waves until every sound feels distant, warped, and just a little too close behind the shoulder.

Ancient ruins cling to the cliffside in broken terraces, half-swallowed by mist and salt, their arches and stairways cracked by centuries of wind. Some structures seem to lead nowhere; others appear only when the fog shifts, which is adorable in the same way a trapdoor is adorable. At night, pale lights flicker between the rocks, and the air carries whispers that sound almost like voices — or worse, like invitations.

The Forgotten Reach matters because it is not merely remote; it is uncertain. Paths change, doors appear where stone should be, and the fog makes distance feel negotiable. Those who come searching for lost history, forbidden passages, or answers buried at the edge of the world may find them — assuming the way back still feels like cooperating.
