The Veil of Vice

Teen 13+
The Veil of Vice is where the realm keeps its temptations. Its stories follow pride, desire, cruelty and greed into the rooms where good manners stop: salons where a soft voice is a snare, households held together by debt, pious halls where judgment forgets mercy, and courts where a spotless name is sewn from silence.

These are dramas more than adventures. The danger is rarely a monster. It is wanting something badly enough to stop counting the cost, or watching someone else do it. Scandal, guilt, temptation and the slow wearing-down of a good person drive every tale. Nobody here is wholly innocent, and the most interesting choice is usually the one that cannot be taken back.

Some masks are worn with pride. Hers was sewn from silence, silk’and denial.

The Cost of Grace

They have spent years becoming the version of themself others could praise without discomfort: gracious, composed, charitable, and useful in all the proper ways. Their smiles soothe courtly tempers, their presence softens hard negotiations, and their name carries the polished shine of someone believed to be above ordinary hunger. That belief is convenient. It is also wrong.

Behind the silk, ceremony, and well-practiced restraint, longing has learned to speak in glances, pauses, and conversations that end too slowly. Their marriage remains civil enough to survive public scrutiny, but not warm enough to silence private ache. When whispers begin to gather around them, the scandal is not only about what they may have done, but what everyone suddenly wants to imagine.

The danger lies in how gently ruin can be delivered. No one needs to shout an accusation when a raised brow, a delayed invitation, or a sympathetic smile can wound with better manners. If the rumor spreads unchecked, they risk losing influence, dignity, access to their child, and the fragile authority they built by behaving exactly as expected.

To endure, they must move through a court that feeds on shame while pretending to defend virtue. Every answer must be measured, every alliance tested, and every secret weighed against the terrible relief of finally being known. Grace may protect them for a while, but it was never free.

A Whisper Sold Twice

The crossroads fair is a tangle of tents, music and haggling. The dancer hires the player as her eyes and her escort while she works the crowd and quietly retraces where her secret went. The ruined merchant wants revenge. The buyer she knows of wants her silence. A rival caravan wants her trade. And someone has been listening outside her tent at night. Every conversation is a bargain, every favor has a price, and she keeps a careful tally of who pays.

The candles burn all night at the old lord's house. Lately, so do his guests.

The Candlelight Hours

The suppers are candlelit, musical and wildly indulgent: card games in the gallery, dancing in the long room, and a quiet valet who never seems to blink and always knows where everyone is. The host charms everyone, remembers every name and insists that his guests stay just a little longer. The player comes in on a borrowed invitation, a sister's coin and a promise to bring her brother home. Then word arrives that a pair of inquisitors in white robes are traveling the road toward town, and the host, for the first time anyone has seen, stops smiling.

Every appetite has a price. Someone always pays it.
